Tuesday Musings...

I meant this to be a Monday Musings post, but ran out of time!

...Outside My Window...
We've had plenty of rainfall lately (yay!), but are getting a few days off, for everything to soak in and dry up a little. The fields have gone from a brown so dry and crispy that it looks like it might spontaneously combust at any moment to a rich, rich green. The skies are still and gray; it is chilly out. Little pools are forming here and there, and that's where the egrets gather.

...Around the House & Yard...
M has been hard at work, between rain showers, building my patio, and some planter boxes. We'll have a really lovely seating area by mid spring! I still have olives to pick, and then trees to prune—apple, olive, and cherry. After M finishes the patio area, we'll work on raised beds for veggies. And I need to work on the front yard design a bit more.

It looks like we'll also have a pretty decent-sized plumbing project coming up... the bathtub faucet won't stop dripping. I was able to stave it off for a while with new washers every month, but that's not working as well anymore, and the plumbing is so old that it is hard to get replacement parts. We'll have to tear out old (cheap) tile, and look at relining the shower/tub walls too.

...In the Kitchen...
We had a very lean couple of weeks food-budget-wise, which was actually good in that it got me really planning and thinking again, rather than just cooking whatever popped up in our minds. On Mondays, I work back-to-back jobs and attend a class (teaching writing to ELL students), so that will officially be our crockpot night! I also have to plan out packable lunches for The Boy, when he's off on his internship all day once a week.

...In Our Homeschooling...
History, through Downton Abbey, is going very well! At the rate of 2, and sometimes 3, episodes per week, we'll finish up all six seasons by the end of our school year in late June. We'll be working on finishing up the Romanov book over the next 3 weeks, and I have some movies and documentaries planned along the way. I'm trying to not overdo my planning this time!

The junior college, well... that didn't work out as well this semester. The intro to engineering class turned out, from the syllabus, to be an intro to the field of engineering—research on types of jobs, how to work toward getting them, etc. I am sure it would be a very useful class for a potential engineer, but it is not what The Boy is looking for at the moment. So he's taking a semester off from college, to focus on his studies at home, and his auto rebuilding. Also, last semester, he was so overwhelmed that he missed a few months of fencing, which he doesn't want to do again.

And we're seeking out a science focus for him. The online robotics course he found intriguing has a lot of higher level math, and he's just not quite there yet. We'll find it.. possibly biology (though that might be good for both kids for next year) or just an overview of science?  And he found something! Imagining Other Earths, from Coursera. It is both introductory and self-paced, wich he's happy about.

The Girl is doing pretty well with her dinosaur paleobiology course, and we're making progress with spelling. Math is going very well with both kids! And we're actually doing math 4-5 times a week!

...Reading and Watching...
Besides the Romanov book linked above, we're still reading A Wrinkle in Time, and we just started The Royal Road to Romance (which sounds cheesy, but is actually a fabulous travelogue from the 1920s). I'm reading The Death of Artemio Cruz, along with my students; various articles on  multilingual literacy and writing for my own class; and A Live Coal in the Sea by Madeline L'Engle for fun. The Girl is still deep in the world of Harry Potter, and The Boy has just about wrapped up Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.

Besides our Downton Abbey habit, The Boy and I are finishing Lost soon, and the kids have started watching The X-Files.

...Crafting...
I finished up another scarf, so I am in between knitting projects. The Girl has been doing a lot of clay crafting, some stop-motion, and plenty of painting recently. The Boy is working on landscapes in Blender.

...On the Agenda...
Fencing, derby (full practice schedule starts up the first week of February), college (for me), plenty of work, car repair internship, etc., etc., etc. We're always busy! Next week should be a little calmer though, as I don't have any scheduled doctor's visits for my dad (I have two this week... regular doctor and optometrist). I also want to check out Mango Languages, as our library offers access to it for free!

Speaking of my dad, we moved him this weekend. He's still in the same independent living facility, just in an apartment that is much closer to the dining room, and activity rooms. It took us (me, my sister and brother, my mom, The Boy, and The Girl) 7 hours to pack his one bedroom apartment up entirely, move it all, and unpack it again. Phew! We're hoping that between the move, the exercise classes he's started, and the physical and occupational therapy, he can stay where he is for a while to come.

I hope your week is good! I'll leave you with a nighttime picture I took of one of my mom's trees starting to bud out.

Happy Autumn!

My favorite season of the year! Now if only the weather would reflect the season, instead of tricking me by being cool for a day or two, and then jumping right back up into the 90s....

What We've Been Up To...

The Boy has decided he wants to go ahead and try the Big History Project with some added science, so for the time being, his homeschooling consists of math, writing, reading, and Big History/Science. Nice and simple.

So The Girl says if he gets The Big History Project, it's high time we get going with the Big Fairy Tale Project. Math, writing/spelling, reading, and fairy tales. Check. By the way, we are really enjoying The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making! It is a little bizarre, but in an appealing way.

She also really wants to stick with reading through a bunch of the Scientists in the Field series, which are excellent books. For both kids, we're actually going to have a science day once a week for hands-on explorations, using BFSU 2 and 3 as general guidelines.

The Afternoon Basket is therefore being set aside for the time being, which is okay.

The Boy loves his classes at the junior college. He was very proud this week when, after trying for the last two weeks and not quite getting it, he finally got all the measurements correct on a worksheet for Machine Tools Technology. His teacher says they need 100% on everything before they can move on to the next step. He says both his teachers are great—enthusiastic, helpful... just what one wants in a teacher! Here's a link to his art teacher's work, currently on display at the on-campus art gallery.

The Girl is getting quite proficient with dictionary use, which is nice to see. She told me yesterday though, after all the great work she's been doing with time telling worksheets, that she still doesn't really get it. Grrrr. Somewhere I have a practice clock we can try working with, or I'll just pull the clock off the family room wall, as it is one of the few I have seen that marks the minutes in 5 minute increments around the edge of the clock.

We've watched an odd assortment of movies lately, among them Dirty Dancing (enjoyed by all), and Carrie (the remake, which is pretty accurate to the original). M and The Boy watched The Ring—The Boy has definitely inherited his dad's love of horror films—and The Girl and I watched The Craft. She and I plan to watch the new Cinderella movie on the weekend, while is at the local airshow with his best buddy. I'm thinking ahead now to October/Halloween movies!

The Girl built a fairy house out of an abalone shell, shoebox, and various odds and ends. She hand-sewed the mattress and pillow herself!

So all in all, a little beginning of the year tweaking still to be done, but I am sure it will all come together!

How is your year going so far?

Hello March! Monday Musings....

...Celebrating!!!...
This week we are celebrating The Girl's TWELFTH birthday! She's asked for a special dinner, time at the local mini-golf/family fun center, and to get her ears (re) pierced. I thought we might also go out and get her a couple of new tops, etc. at a lovely little thrift store. She also wants a couple of books, but overall, she's not asking for much. I have a hard time grasping that my "baby" is turning 12!

 ...Outside My Window...
The weather is all over the place! On Saturday, we had a brief though intense rain-thunder-lightning storm. Then it was sunny and almost warm again! This morning is cold, overcast, and a bit dreary, with a drizzle, or another possible thunderstorm, on the way, though the rest of the week is supposed to be "pleasant and sunny".

We are getting some awesome clouds though!

...In My House & Kitchen...
Tonight I am making Veracruz-Style "Red Snapper", but with swai, because that it what I have on hand (I might leave out the jalapeno). Last night was spaghetti and meatballs, always a hit, and a couple of the other meals for the week include a chicken enchilada casserole, and my turkey 3-bean chili (a special request for The Girl's birthday).

...In Our Garden...
We're getting the raised beds built! My mom gave us a bunch of old lumber, so we are re-purposing it. I can't wait to have actual soil for my veggies to grow in, rather than the hard-as-stone stuff our yard is made of. The cherry and apple trees are leafing out, and the chickens have finally started laying eggs again -- we got three yesterday! We adopted four rabbits recently that are settling in nicely.

...In Our Homeschooling...
We're shaking things up a bit, and The Girl will be spending some time with Fred... we're lucky enough to have a friend that owns the whole series up through Beginning Algebra, so we can borrow books as needed. The Girl's really frustrated with Saxon lately, and I hate to see her starting to dislike math. She'll also be starting her online dinosaur paleobiology course this week (do note -- she's just watching the videos, etc., not really "doing" the class). The Boy is about midway through his online course in Scratch programming, and is already looking ahead at other courses he can take. He might "take a look at" LoF Beginning Algebra this week too, but will likely stick with Jacobs. He's also starting a foray into chemistry, so I've been gathering books, online resources, ACS's free middle school program, and he's going to check out some Crash Course Chemistry videos. This will be instead of physics for the time being.

...Reading & Watching...
The Girl and I are starting The Dragon in the Cliff today. On her own, she's got a stack of books she's picking and choosing from, including Beezus & Ramona, Little House in the Big Woods, A Mother Goose Treasury, A Light in the Attic (she's discovered she really enjoys poetry!), and several non-fiction titles too. We've gone from not reading, to having to check on her late at night to make sure she's not still up reading! [enter mock exasperation]

The Boy also has a stack of books going, ranging from Chemistry for Dummies to a re-reading of The Kane Chronicles. Of course, he's stuck on the computer a lot lately, which I need to curb, so he has more time for all those books!

Together, we are still reading about northern California, and The Hobbit. I am about to start Quartet for the End of Time, which looks intriguing. I'm always on the hunt for good new (at least new to me!) novels. We finished season 5 of Downton Abbey last night, and though I am truly sorry it is over already, I loved, loved, loved the last episode! So we are back to Lost. And of course Big History, Walking with Dinosaurs (Cassia), and various other science documentaries, etc.

...Doing & Making...
The Girl is still sculpting.
Rollin' the Dice

The Boy is combing through The Art of Tinkering and The Art of the Catapult for fun projects. I'm still working on finishing up a scarf, and I've got another batch of cat toys to sew.

...What We've Been Up To & What We're Doing...
We were lucky enough last Thursday to get to see The Mayhem Poets perform in a "school" show. The kids had never seen poetry performed before, and it was a fantastic experience, and probably is part of the fuel behind The Girl's current poetry adoration. And of course, we went to park day with friends, had fencing and derby practice, though The Boy missed one fencing session due to allergies.

And then, to be done: The birthday. Fencing. Derby practice. Taking my dad shopping for The Girl's birthday. Maybe meeting with a friend that wants me to tutor her 8th grade, 13 year old daughter in algebra. Park day. More exercise (me). And we're planning a two-night camping trip for next weekend at a local campground!

Have a good week! And enjoy some tree pictures from our last park day...

Thanksgiving Week Already!

Another year simply zipping by far too quickly.

On the Agenda...
Well, Thanksgiving, of course! The kids and I will be at my mom's for dinner, M will be at work. Usually I bring desserts -- pumpkin pie, an apple-cranberry tart, and a apple-quince-mince pie, plus whipping cream.

The kids and I have started making a little money on the side through sewing catnip toys for a local cat-grass/toy provider. The Boy cuts, I sew and pink, and The Girl stuffs the toys! Since they have a rush order needed for Christmas, we're planning a few blocks of sewing mania this week.

Of course there is fencing on the agenda. The Boy participated in a team tournament on Saturday, and while he had a lot of fun, his team lost badly. At least they all enjoyed themselves!

I work two days this week, and have one class to go to, as well as one tutoring session to provide. I'll be glad tomorrow afternoon when I am officially off the rest of the week!

In Our Homeschooling...
Yes, we are homeschooling for Thanksgiving week, as we did not get a lot done, book-wise, last week. There will be math, geography, writing, and reading, as well as some science. The Boy did build several virtual roller coasters yesterday as part of science, using what he had learned in Conceptual Physics as far as velocity, acceleration, etc. The Girl will work on geometry this week, while The Boy continues in algebra, learning and reviewing division with variables.

What We're Reading...
The Boy is reading The Scorch Trials, book two in the Maze Runner series, while The Girl is still working on Black Beauty. I wrote last Monday that I'm having trouble keeping her reading, so now we all have a half hour or so a day when we sip tea while reading quietly. I love it, since it gives me a chance to read my own books (currently Gentian Hill, having just re-read a bunch of Maeve Binchy books, and in the mood for something different)! I'll also read aloud from The Marvellous Land of the Snergs, and maybe some more of Edward Lear's poetry. We'll tackle another chapter or two of Poop Happened, start reading about Europe, and try to get to the other books in our Afternoon Basket.

What We're Watching...
We did watch The Golden Compass last night, and we still really wish they had made movies for the other books in the trilogy. We've also watched half of Amadeus so far, and plan to finish it this week. So far, the kids see Antonio Salieri as both a victim and villain (and yes, they are aware that much of this movie is supposition). We're also watching, as a family, The 100, though we haven't gotten very far. The Boy plans to watch another episode of Cosmos, and The Girl will be about halfway through Life in the Undergrowth this week. I am starting to think ahead to Christmas movies -- what are some of your favorites?

Crafting...
I finally started knitting regularly again! I still have a gift certificate from my birthday last year to a lovely little yarn store, so I am trying to finish up the scarves I had started for The Girl and myself before treating myself to a little "spending spree". The kids made and decorated beeswax candles at the library last week, and they smell wonderful.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving week!

Weekly Report with Pictures...

It was a busy week, and we're still trying to find our footing, so to speak, what with work, and college, and all that!

We visited the feed store for chicken and guinea pig supplies, which meant, of course, that we had to check out the rabbits, chickens, ducks, etc.

And there was blackberry picking, which resulted in blackberry cobbler, blackberry-apple crisp, and blackberry-strawberry compote. Now that I finally have a working oven again (it's been about 6 months), we'll be making some Blackberry Cornmeal muffins as soon as we get back out to pick more berries!

And the kids have been busy with crafts during their mornings at my mom's house. First up are The Girl's crafts - lots of glue and old Altoids tins involved... she also made me a bracelet and necklace (bead work), which I'll get pictures of later.

And then there is The Boy's work, definitely Steampunk-inspired!

And a close-up...

With the crafts, and errands, and lots of Story Cube play, and fencing, and derby practice (at which The Girl took her first major fall, but got right back up and started skating again), and reading, and watching some favorite TV shows, it has been a jam-packed week!

Hope you all had a good week, and that you'll have a good weekend!

Jumping on the Menu Monday bandwagon... and more...

Menu Plan Monday

Now that I don't work at a grocery store, I try to shop only once a week, so menu planning is key! This week we'll be lucky enough to have two Thanksgivings, one at my mom's house, and one at home. Here's what we'll be having this week...

Monday
Beef & 2-bean chili with salsa, tomatoes, avocado, cilantro, and tortilla chips

Tuesday
Pasta with a good marinara sauce; garlic bread; salad

Wednesday
Thanksgiving #1 at my mom's

Thursday
Thanksgiving at home - turkey; cornbread stuffing; homemade cranberry sauce; mashed potatoes & gravy; green beans with brown butter and chopped hazelnuts; succotash; a big green salad; pumpkin pie; apple-quince-mince pie

Friday
Leftovers cleverly disguised as open face hot turkey sandwiches with gravy; salad of some sort

Saturday
I am thinking we'll need a break from turkey, so Cricket and I will be cooking a dinner to reflect our country of the week - Poland. We're making perogi to be served with chives, sour cream, and bacon. The side dish will be beets and cucumbers with vinegar (almost pickled!)

Sunday
I have some leftover wild rice, so I thought I would make roasted squash/veg and wild rice, and serve it with some homemade bread, probably rye since we all like that one. I had found a recipe for the soup on a blog recently, but now I can't for the life of me figure out whose blog it was!

On another note, we're looking at making some fun ornaments in early December for our Christmas tree/home. We do have store-bought ornaments, but homemade ones are special, and fun. Some options...

Glittered, Wax-dipped Pinecones
I really like these toadstool ornaments
Trying to think of an icing lid substitute for these lovely felted ornaments
Felt Shooting Stars
And I have a book with instructions for straw star ornaments like these
And cinnamon dough bird ornaments

Most of these don't look that difficult, though some might be time consuming. I don't know that we'll get a chance to make them all, but even a few homemade ornaments would be nice!

The week of Thanksgiving...

We're officially taking a week off from homeschooling, but what does that mean? It means reading, crafts, games, and a chance for me to plan for the three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Break!

Books I plan to read this upcoming week include:
Three Young Pilgrims (partly because I own it)
More of Oliver Twist
The Leaf Man and Why Do Leaves Change Color?
Start reading The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
Multiple selections from Cricket's library pile!

Crafts:
I'd like to make Leaf Men/Women, inspired by The Leaf Man book mentioned above
And we'd like to make Nature Collage Suncatchers inspired by Jessica and Ben, which incidentally means we'll have to go for a good nature walk! I also have a book of nature crafts on loan from a good friend, and plan on digging through that for more ideas.

And on a side note, today is my sixteenth wedding anniversary! We're having a lovely dinner with this (including the wild rice side dish), and then a pear-gingerbread upside-down cake. And we have a movie to watch, since it is one we haven't seen yet.

Fun Stuff...

Cyrus is building a paper world, all with free downloads from Made by Joel.

We didn't do anything remotely homeschooly yesterday, since I worked from 6 am to 1 pm, then took a nap, then tried to go to class. Thankfully the class was cancelled for the day, so I ended up with a lovely evening at home. So now we're gearing up for the week... I thought we'd just have fun with homeschooling for a while, so I put a bunch of books on hold for Cassia at the library (and Cyrus can listen in) that have to do with apples, pumpkins, etc. Kind of autumn things. This will obviously be an apple week!

Additionally, all the books I put on hold about Columbus are ready for pick-up, so I thought we would start on those.

It should be a good week, full of stories, oh and this science kit, which we are finally going to use...
